CMU New Works Series Fall 2019

Every fall and spring Carnegie Mellon University's School of Drama produces their New Works Series in which they stage three plays written by the graduate dramatic writers. The fall 2019 New Works Series never had a stage manager attached to the project so a week before tech I was brought on to the project as the stage manager. With a two week turn around I learned three shows, loaded-in to an off-campus theatre, trained a run crew of three, led a weekend of tech and opened three shows for a subsequent two-week run. Being thrown into this project at the last minute, and essentially learning on the job, was a particularly rewarding experience. As a directing student, it is very unusual to get an opportunity to take on a role outside of my major. However, I found that I learned so much about directing through the lens of stage management. More than anything it was great practice in creating a community quickly and executing the visions of the three productions with precision and care.
